Electrical Stimulation

Here at In Motion Chiropractic and Rehabilitation, we are proud to offer e-stim to our patients.

Stimulation can be a fantastic tool to assist you in feeling better. When applied to tissue, electric currents create thermal, physiological, and chemical responses. The currents also alter pain impulses.

We use interferential stimulation the most. Two channels of electrical stimulation create a third current that penetrates the affected tissues with little resistance. This stimulation will help control the pain and muscle contractions.

There are many benefits of electrical stimulation. Many of our patients say that it helps reduce edema as well as the swelling caused by fluid in the body’s tissues.

Our entire staff is dedicated to assisting you in your healing process. We focus on the root of the problem instead of covering it up with medication. By doing this, we are able to help solve the problem so that you are not in any pain anymore. Our number one goal is to assist you. We are always available to answer any questions that you have.

If you are experiencing pain, always let us know so that we can gently work around it and ensure that your sessions are beneficial and help in the healing process. We are always here for you.

What Should I Expect With ICT?

This type of stimulation we most commonly utilize releases endorphins to promote recovery while increasing blood circulation to the area to support the body’s natural healing process. ICT helps decrease swelling and inflammation and reduce or eliminate pain. It can also increase joint mobility and range of motion.

Though it may sound like a complicated or uncomfortable treatment, ICT is safe and painless. In fact, most patients say that they feel less discomfort and side effects with ICT than with other types of electrical stimulation. Most describe the experience as a tingling or ‘pins and needles’ sensation on the skin.

Interferential current therapy usually requires sessions with a duration of about 9 to 15 minutes. During this time, Dr.T will attach four electrode pads to the area which will be treated. Wires connect the pads to the current intensity regulator device which delivers the frequencies required.

Frequently Asked Questions

Active populations enjoy the added recovery gained from e-stim. We have seen no limit to the number of individual sporting disciplines that apply e-stim to their recovery process. We also see it heavily utilized in rehabilitation as well.

There are virtually no side effects with e-stim itself. Sometimes, we see irritation at the site of the electrode application – but this is due to skin reactions to adhesive, not the actual stimulation. Excessive use can result in some soreness, but our staff is well educated and knowledgeable about application times.

If you find yourself wanting more e-stim therapy, getting your own unit is a great option if you are educated on how to use the device. Our staff would be happy to direct you to our favorite unit providers.
